About the ULU Volleyball Club

The ULU Volleyball club caters mainly for players who have significant previous volleyball experience at a competitive level, as well as offering a recreational/beginners session. The ULU team is made up of students from most of the ULU colleges including: King's, Imperial (up until 2007), UCL, SOAS, Queen Mary, LSE, Birkbeck, Institute of Education, School of Pharmacy, Goldsmiths, LSHTM, Royal Holloway, St. George's and Royal Veterinary College.

The ULU Volleyball Club has been one of ULU's most successful clubs in the past ten years. The ULU Volleyball Club's teams compete in the highest divisions of the London League (Men's Premier and Women's Premier), as well as competing in the Student Cup, held every year in Leeds. Since 2003, we have also taken part in the BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) Championships. Finally, the women's team has entered the National KO Cup.

Although we have often considered entry to the National League and the potential exists to produce good results at this level, ULU has never played in the National League because not only would this be a huge financial burden, but would also require competing students to sacrifice large amounts of time travelling to matches, which might jeopardise their studies. Nonetheless, a number of ULU players also play for National League Division 1 clubs.

The ULU Volleyball Club is indebted to the help of several ULU alumni for all their help in keeping this club together over the years. Special mention should be given to Marika Karanassou (1993-2003), who ran the club for many, many years and coached long after she was no longer a student. Other legendary ULU volunteers include Nassos Vafeidis (1996 - 2003), Kati Beier (1997 - 1998, 2001 - 2002), Christos Vasilakis (1997 - 2004, and he is back), Torsten Vilkner (2002 - 2005), Kristina Sagen (1995 - 1999), Kathleen Noreisch (1997-2007) and Nicolas Ruh (2003-2007).
