The ULU Volleyball Club ONLY caters to currently registered students at the University of London.
If you are a UL student and would like to play in a less competitive team you should find out if your individual college has a volleyball team (For example, UCL, LSE, King's, Royal Holloway do). Some of these teams compete within BUSA and in the UL Mixed League. See the Union sites for more information:
If your college does not have a team, you should consider joining our recreational session!
If you are a student but not registered at the University of London (ie. you study at Westminster, City, London Metropolitan, Southbank University, UeL), sorry but you CANNOT play for ULU.
BUSA stands for British Universities Sports Assocation and are in charge of almost all student sports competitions in the country. They also run the annual BUSA volleyball student competitions, including League matches or tournaments, from October to February, which lead to a knock-out round at the end of a February and and a Finals tournament in March. The League matches are played around the country in 5 different divisions - South East, West, Midlands, North and Scotland. Each league has a number of Tiers and teams can be relegated and promoted depending on how they performed the previous season. Tier 1 teams have a chance to go on to the championships in March and Tier 2 compete for the Shield, while Tier 3 compete in the Plate competition.
The UL Mixed League is a mixed volleyball league. Many of the UL colleges have a mixed team that competes in this league. Playoffs and finals take place in the spring. This competition has been won by King's in recent years. As the Mixed League consists of teams from the individual Colleges within the UL, the ULU mixed team is not entitled to participate. Instead we try to organise friendly matches.
The EVA Student Cup is organised by the EVA and is completely independent of BUSA. The EVA Student Cup finals take place in Leeds in February of each year. Qualifications take place in November. For many years the Student Cup has been considered the inofficial University Championship. ULU Volleyball has a long history of participation at this tournament. ULU men won the Student Cup in 2001, 2003 and 2004. ULU women won in 1996 and have been trying to beat Loughborough in the finals ever since.
During the summer, many Universities all over Europe organise sport events open for international University teams. ULU volleyball has developed the habit of participating in the Alcazar International Tournament in Rotterdam, both with increasing success and numbers - leading to three different ULU mixed teams participating in 2005 one of which, finally, managed to win instead of always just losing the final like in previous years.
